Original 5th Doctor items on eBay -
August 2016

This first item I found on eBay this month was originally sold at the big Bonhams Doctor Who costume auction in 1991.

It was either part of Lot 49 or Lot 50, which contained a number of costume pieces from Resurrection Of The Daleks, including body suits, belts, jackets, helmets and the cap.

The hat was re-sold (or one very similar) at another Bonhams auction in 2011.

I am not 100% sure if this is the same hat - there were many made for the story so it could be one of many.

Still, the seller has provided some great detailed images of the hat, giving some clues to its construction.

Resurrection Of The Daleks
Prison ship soldier’s hat

This is a gem.

This is a genuine (not replica) cap from the classic episode of Doctor Who- Resurrection of the Daleks. It was worn by the soldiers who boarded the spaceship.

This was bought from John Fitton (RIP) Books and Magazines c. 1990, folowing the selloff of costumes from the BBC.

Not sure how to price this. It originally cost me £75, and that was quite some time ago. So open to offers. Buyer is welcome to inspect in person before buying, but cash only for collection (Surrey) please.

If you have any questions, please do ask. I have a number of harder-to-find Doctor Who items up for auction, so please do take a look and see if anthing takes your fancy.

Bonham auction - 29th June 2016

After Bamfords nipped in earlier this month an stole Bonhams thunder, it’s now time for the summer Film and Entertainment auction at Bonhams in Knightsbridge.

There is a mix of new items; some items previously sold; and some items from previous sales that went unsold, now listed with lower estimates.

For the Fifth Doctor it is all new stuff which I haven’t seen at auction before, though the Earthshock helmet could be the one sold at Bonhams in 1992.

As usual I have separated the items by Doctor era, and you can see the rest of the items here:
Here are just the lots relating to the Fifth Doctor era
Lot 82
Doctor Who: A Cyberman Charge,

Lot 85
Doctor Who: A Cyberman head, 1960s-1980s,

in silver-painted composite material, inside dome with foam, 17in (43cm) high

FOOTNOTES
According to information received from the vendor, this head began as a new style of Cyberman made by Jack Lovell for 'The Invasion', 1968, and was screen used in this story, following which it then had corrugated pipes added and screen used in 'Revenge Of The Cybermen', 1975. After this it was kept in the BBC archive until the early 1980s, when it was decided that the Cybermen should be completely revamped for their appearance in 'Earthshock', 1982. Richard Gregory of Imagineering was given the contract to design the new style of Cyberman and was given this 'Invasion/Revenge' Cyber head to work from. He re- sculpted the head by cutting areas out, adding details such as the eyebrows and ear sides, using items to hand such as metal, wood and filler. The final result was the head offered here: this head was then used as the master form for all Cybermen made during the 1980s. (The clear mouth and handle bars are later replacements.) Spanning three decades of the classic T.V. series, it is believed no other example of an 'Invasion/Revenge' Cyberman head exists.
Estimate £4,000 - 5,000

Sold for £6,250

Sunday puzzler - Fifth Doctor DVD sleeve

This DVD set came out November last year as a HMV exclusive.
It’s nothing super special - just three classic Fifth Doctor adventures bundled up in a card box.

It includes his first and last outings, Castrovalva and The Caves of Androzani, plus the return of the Cybermen in Earthshock.

The box art is nicely done, and sits well with the other two similar sets for the Third and Fourth Doctors.

But I have a  ittle quiz question for you - and I’ll give you the full answer this time next week.

What’s wrong - or should I say, has been put right about the portrait shot of Peter Davison?

Post your answers in the comments below, and come back this time next week for the reveal - and how I helped!

Bonhams FLASHBACK: -
31st March 1994 Entertainment Sale

I’m getting quite into tracking down past Bonhams Entertainment auctions where Doctor Who items were sold.

It started with the 1991 Doctor Who auction, where dozens of costumes and props were up for grabs. I’ve since traced later sales where many times from the 1991 auction were resold, and some of these still pop up today from time to time.

A couple of weeks ago I found a Bonhams catalogue from 1994, containing 22 lots of Who-related items on sale.

Frustratingly due to the cost of producing print publications in the days, there are no photographs to illustrate the items on offer (every image would have had to be taken on film and processed, compared to the instant and cheap nature of digital photography today).

These sales also pre-date the internet, so finding the realised prices is near impossible.

Less care seems to have been taken in preparing the text in the catalogue.

There are a number of spelling errors and possible mis-titling of episodes, but since some of these are for pre-production scripts (and therefore possibly correct at the time) I have replicated the text here exactly as it appeared in the 1994 catalogue.

As usual I have separated the items by Doctor era, and you can see the rest of the items here:

Here are just the lots relating to the Fourth Doctor era

Please note there are a number of spelling and title errors in the catalogue, which I have repeated here for accuracy as some may refer to early drafts of scripts

Bonhams FLASHBACK: -

Last week I showed you the content of a Bonhams sale from January 1992. In it a large number of ex-BBC Costume Dept outfits from Doctor Who were sold off.

Since then I have found another catalogue from 1992, this time from August.

Interestingly a number of the extensive Doctor Who items sound very much like those sold back in January, though with much higher estimates this time around.

More recently I think we have seen some of these lots continuing to be sold on. It’s fascinating to trace the items back through the various auction catalogues, following the prices they sell for.
